Travelling Light

I have a lot of camera equipment; Camera bodies, lenses, filter systems, tripods, lighting equipment, reflectors and numerous other accessories. And I've often been found lugging around the whole lot, particular on corporate shoots.

So I was faced with a challenge recently, I was going on a 6 day hike in the Northern Territory carrying a full pack for the duration. I therefore needed to minimise both weight and space when considering what gear to take.

My camera of choice for this trip was the Fuji XT-2, a great little mirrorless camera with weather proof sealing and a full functional range. I just took it's kit lens the 18-55 XF zoom. For a tripod I took the tiny but awesomely versatile Joby Gorillapod 3kg kit . The only other kit I had part from a couple of spare batteries of course was a terrific set of intelligently designed UV and CPL Filters from Gobe. Everything was packed into a small think tank camera case which I could conveniently hang to the chest strap of my backpack to allow easy access whilst hiking.

So, did I miss having my full frame Canon 5D mkIV and an L-Series landscape lens plus a full set of graduated and ND filters? Well yes of course, they allow me to take beautiful pictures, but I did not miss the extra 5kg that that would have entailed plus the extra tripod weight. However I was still really pleased with the results that I got.

The below images are all taken with the aforementioned equipment. The hike was the Jatbula trail which is in the Nitmiluk National Park and runs for 60kms between Katherine Gorge and Edith Falls. I highly recommend it, it was my first big hike for a couple of years due to some ongoing foot problems ... and it was so good to be back on the trail.
